Music is an essentially social activity and people usually have a lot of fun making music together. During the pandemic of the COVID-19, due to official recommendations of social distancing, musicians were prevented from doing what they like best: performing live with other musicians. SYNAPTIC CONCERTS I & II – The musical brain in action

In these concert-lectures, performed by pianists Elza Gushikem and Patricia Vanzella, we explored what happens to our brains while listening to and making music. During the concerts, Professor João R. Sato used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to record and show the brain activity of musicians making music. In the 2nd Synaptic Concert, we also used an Eye-Tracker to show the conductor’s gaze while conducting the orchestra.
