Synaptic Concerts

EXPLORING THE MUSICAL BRAIN | The SYNAPTIC CONCERTS are outreach events that aim to disseminate science through music.

SYNAPTIC CONCERT OF THE ANIMALS – The musical brain during the pandemic

Music is fundamentally a social activity, and people often have a great deal of fun making music together. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing guidelines prevented musicians from engaging in their favorite activity: performing live with others. In this rendition of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, we explore the science behind music and celebrate the joy of creating music together—even when “together” means being in our own cages, like animals in a zoo. SYNAPTIC CONCERTS I & II – The musical brain in action

In these concert-lectures, performed by pianists Elza Gushikem and Patricia Vanzella, we explored what happens to our brains while listening to and making music. During the concerts, Professor João R. Sato used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to record and show the brain activity of musicians making music. In the 2nd Synaptic Concert, we also used an Eye-Tracker to show the conductor’s gaze while conducting the orchestra.
